What is the Best Job in the World?
*So, what is the best job in the world?
*Is it being an A list actor in Hollywood?
*Being a disk jockey to a crowd of thousands in the best club in Ibiza?
*Photographing landmarks all over the world?
*Singing to an audience of thousands at Wembley Stadium?
*Or working as a caretaker on an island?
Who knows, the list is endless but I guess it's up to you - the individual - to decide what's best.
If I were to write down every job I've worked at from the age of 16 I'd say it was probably around 50 different jobs. From catering to canvassing and from mini cab driving to chocolate making. Yes! That was a yummy job but it did not last long.
It is funny when in retrospect I have never lasted longer then a few months in any one particular job. It's probably the reason why I moved into film making because every project I worked on was creative, every job I took on was fresh, every person I dealt with was different and every film I've done made me learn something new.
Is it the best job?
No, I don't believe so, why? Because I don't feel I've achieved it to my fullest potential. What`do I mean by that? I have still a lot to learn, obstacles to overcome and challenges to endure. I enjoy the buzz of seeing a project come to fruition and seeing the end result and every new project is an adventure in itself so yes - the best job in the world should be adventurous and take you on an exploration of your new self, it should challenge you and get you out of your comfort zone and allow you to flex your muscles.
Many employers can't stand their day to day jobs because of many reasons, whether its their boss, their colleagues they work with or the environment they work in. So, the question to ask yourself is not what can your job do for you, but what can you do for your job! (Yes, Kennedy would be proud of me right now).
A great job is one which allows you to transform yourself and go beyond your own comfort zones - on a regular basis. If you keep doing the same things day in day out of course you'll get bored and eventually hate your job. You do not have to hate your work or anything that you are doing. Hate is a choice that comes from having hateful thoughts. Hate is not caused by having to travel to work every day in congested crowds, or clean toilets, or wash cars, or collect garbage, or attend committee meetings all day in which nothing is accomplished. The circumstances are irrelevant. The loathing exists inside of you, not in the external world.
Listen to yourself, inside, and encourage yourself to transcend further, rather then allowing the old you keep you at the position that you are at the moment. If you continuously repeat certain patterns in your life try and shift your momentum else where and do something different, something awkward, something challenging - Hey, do something silly if you have to. Make a commitment to do precisely that. By extending yourself to new levels you will begin to transform your life and begin to see things differently - especially in your working environment.
Ben Southall has won the best job in the world contest a couple of weeks ago. his job entails spending the next 6 months as a caretaker on an island in Queensland, Australia. His job will encompass exploring the neighboring island, swim, snorkel, discover wildlife and everything else that is considered adventurous. And he will be paid handsomely for his efforts - $150,000 to be exact.
I believe the job Ben has won is considered by many to be the best job not necessarily because of the location he'll be working at, or not having a boss to look over his shoulder every time or not having to travel to work in a congested traffic. But because it is adventurous. Every day will take him in a new direction, every day he will explore new things, every day he will grow and be challenged.
But that's not to mean that each and every one of the jobs we work at cannot be the same, we can all try that little bit harder, push a little bit extra and try to improve ourselves at work, we can all do something different every day that scares us, we can all approach our jobs with a different perspective and make it just as adventurous and exciting like Ben will.
